The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights recently held a public hearing on Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. When Title IX was originally passed, it was intended to give women and girls equal opportunity in education. Now, unfortunately, some are trying to use Title IX to take away opportunities from women. Nowhere is this more apparent than the arena of women’s sports.
As a high school student, Selina Soule was one of the female athletes who was thrust onto the national stage because she dared to speak the truth about the biological differences of males and females in athletics. Selina’s fight began when a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference policy allowed male athletes who identify as female to compete on girls’ sports teams. During Selina’s four years in high school, that policy resulted in two biological males winning 15 women’s state championship titles in track and field – titles that were previously held by nine different girls. With the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, Selina and three other high school girls filed a lawsuit against the state of Connecticut to help preserve a level playing field for female athletes. That courageous lawsuit has sparked attention to this important issue, and legislation to protect women and girls, around the country.
ADF is defending a number of female athletes across the country who are standing to preserve women’s sports. Additionally, eight states have enacted laws like the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act to protect women’s and girl’s sports for female athletes. Louisiana is currently considering a similar bill.
Here’s how you can pray for fairness in women’s sports:
Judicial
Pray that the Second Circuit Court of Appeals will rule favorably in Selina Soule’s case: Soule v. Connecticut Association of Schools.
Legislative
Pray that more states would take the step to protect women’s sports by enacting into law a Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.
Cultural
Recent polls show that 74 percent of Californians and 77 percent of likely voters from swing states oppose male athletes competing in women’s sports. Pray that more parents, teachers, and Christian leaders will have the courage to speak out against this radical assault on girls and women.
Church
Pray that the Church would stand for the truth of God’s creative order in which He created male and female for the flourishing of society.
