A letter from Pennsylvania’s Food Bank networks, Feeding Pennsylvania and Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, has said, “Yes, we are open,” in spite of state mandates prohibiting on-site work at non-life sustaining businesses during this COVID-19 crisis.
“[R]egardless of the Pennsylvania mandates for business closing, quarantine, and/or sheltering, the charitable food network will always be exempt,” they said, because “[o]ur work on the front lines to fight food insecurity across the Commonwealth is considered life sustaining work.”
This work includes that of food banks and partner agencies—pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters—and most of all, their most valuable asset, their volunteers.
The letter noted that access to safe and nourishing food through their network is needed now more than ever. If you are healthy and able, please take precautions and continue to operate and volunteer, they urged.
“Together, we are meeting an essential need when our communities need us the most.”
